Hello Internet;

The last couple of days have been spent on the QOTA set, building one of the more involved sets… a space ship.

I should reaffirm that point that I am Tracy Lavigne's assistant on this shoot, and this her plan. I show up and do what I'm told, like spray painting metal and drilling guide holes every 16 inches.

The spaceship is actually a very tight frame, so we can get away with focusing detail in a small area. Instead of creating a full room with panels and buttons and all the other jargon associated with a space station we can just build a seat, walls, and windows.

So remember folks, when you see this beautiful shot, its a 4X8 box in Tracy’s living room, leveled with a lot of shims because its an old house.

Hello Internet;

Something fun is opening up this weekend! Bard in the Barracks opens it’s two shows, Measure for Measure and A Midsummer Nights Dream. Maybe I will catch you there this weekend. See the show descriptions below and catch a couple of my props in the park.

A Midsummer Night's Dream is Shakespeare's most popular and best-known comedy, a tale of magic, mischievous fairies, and love lost and found on a charmed and chaotic summer night in the woods.

Set in the Hollywood "dream factory" of the mid twentieth century and performed in the thick woods of beautiful Odell Park under some of the largest and oldest trees in New Brunswick, Bard in the Barrack's A Midsummer Night's Dream will be pure magic. Enjoy music, song, and dance, including selections from some of the best-loved numbers of such classics movie musicals as Singing in the Rain and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, bringing the Bard to a new life as the sun sets on a beautiful Fredericton evening.

Measure for Measure, Shakespeare’s “problem comedy,” is an enigmatic tale wrought from the materials of tragedy, offering a frank and remarkably contemporary treatment of love and lust, gender and power, and the inscrutable complexities of the human heart.

Staged in the shadow of the Justice Building and set in the 1960s, a time of fast-changing mores around sexuality and personal freedom, this new production of a fascinating play is also inspired by its relevance to our time. Measure for Measure emerges as Shakespeare’s #MeToo play: sexual coercion, abuse of authority, and the limits of justice and mercy are just some of the 21st-century issues it explores. Join us at the Barracks for a rollercoaster of a story that is as entertaining as it is provocative.
Tickets are by donation during previews. Pay What Thou Wilt!

Hello Internet;

It’s another day on the QOTA set. Today we filmed the storage locker scene and the town hall scene.

It was a very sunny day. The team needed to set up a shade sail for the doorway. Thankfully the camera frame was tight and little else was needed for light control.

This was a heavy day in terms of extra’s as well. A lot of Fredericton locals showed up for the town hall scene. This all went very smoothly and we were done ahead of schedule, a testament to Jill's production team.

Hello Internet;

Today was a frustrating day in the art department. I lost the key for the storage locker that needed to be set up today. I found it at noon and had to rush to get it done.

I didn’t have enough boxes, so I went to all the cardboard recycling dumpsters in the area. The Fero and GFL trucks are efficient. The cardboard dumpsters were full when I drove past to search for the key, and they were empty when I drove past again 30 mins later. I was racing the trucks across the north side to find a dumpster that hadn't been taken away. I found some more boxes, and I may have to cheat the screen to make the locker look full.

I had a Canada Arts Council funding class at 4pm. I came home made the protest posters for QOTA. I slipped and cut my leg. There are no band-aids in my house so I have some paper towel taped to my leg instead.

I think I need to stop for the day. It will be better tomorrow.

Hello Internet;I’m back on set for QOTA. Remember that algae I was making last week? well, here it is on set. A big thank you to Theatre New Brunswick and Red Rover Cider for lending us science glassware.

So, building a set is a lot of work. What you see on screen is not the same as what we see surrounding the frame. This shot has filters over the fluorescent light bulbs, curtains with diva lights to diffuse the lights and a dolly track on apple boxes and pancakes to create a slow push. The boom guy is off screen but catching every shuffle the crew makes and the actors are repeating the scenes over and over again so the crew can catch it from all angles.

Hello Internet;

This weekend, I spent some time at the workshop in Memorial Hall to do an 8X8 mural of the Egyptian pyramids. This painting will be used in this season's production of A Midsummers Night Dream produced by Bard in the Barracks. Here’s a sneak peek at the almost finished work.

Hello Internet;

Today I’m back on the QOTA set. Somehow, finding science equipment is way harder than anything I’ve had to do yet. It turns out, I don’t meet too many scientists in my line of work.

Today, we were dressing a room in the forestry building. We built a grow table, sourced an old microscope and I figured out how to make fake algae. I used T&T aloe drink, green dye, and matcha powder. We will shoot this room on Monday, and I will need to make 4.5 gallons of fake algae over the weekend.

Every day is different in my line of work. Gotta love it.

Hello Internet;

Now that I am done celebrating my birthday (until Ribfest) I am willing to discuss my work over the weekend… Ahem…

As many of you know I worked with Bard in the Barracks and NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival last summer. This year, I have been commissioned to do some larger, more time-consuming props. These props are an 8X8 canvas of Egypt and a giant flower.

I’ve been working on the flower. The petals require hand stitching because I don’t have a machine that can withstand the chicken wire inside. The needles may break and it will take me more time to fix the needles than I have. Know that I have been sat watching Rom-Coms and spending hours of my life stitching for your the enjoyment of outdoor theater.
