Something fun is opening up this weekend! Bard in the Barracks opens it’s two shows, Measure for Measure and A Midsummer Nights Dream. Maybe I will catch you there this weekend. See the show descriptions below and catch a couple of my props in the park.
A Midsummer Night's Dream is Shakespeare's most popular and best-known comedy, a tale of magic, mischievous fairies, and love lost and found on a charmed and chaotic summer night in the woods.
Set in the Hollywood "dream factory" of the mid twentieth century and performed in the thick woods of beautiful Odell Park under some of the largest and oldest trees in New Brunswick, Bard in the Barrack's A Midsummer Night's Dream will be pure magic. Enjoy music, song, and dance, including selections from some of the best-loved numbers of such classics movie musicals as Singing in the Rain and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, bringing the Bard to a new life as the sun sets on a beautiful Fredericton evening.
Measure for Measure, Shakespeare’s “problem comedy,” is an enigmatic tale wrought from the materials of tragedy, offering a frank and remarkably contemporary treatment of love and lust, gender and power, and the inscrutable complexities of the human heart.
Staged in the shadow of the Justice Building and set in the 1960s, a time of fast-changing mores around sexuality and personal freedom, this new production of a fascinating play is also inspired by its relevance to our time. Measure for Measure emerges as Shakespeare’s #MeToo play: sexual coercion, abuse of authority, and the limits of justice and mercy are just some of the 21st-century issues it explores. Join us at the Barracks for a rollercoaster of a story that is as entertaining as it is provocative.
